Supporting Scheme 2016-2017

Hong Kong X offers a grant of 20,000 HKD for each selected Final Year Project to financially support the execution and enhancement of the student research projects. Payment will be released in three instalments, and the first instalment will be awarded upon confirmation of selection. There will be a maximum of 50 projects for the academic year of 2016 - 2017. Application deadline is Wednesday, November, 30, 2016, and the selection announcement is expected by the end of December, 2016.

Application Condition

Any undergraduate student who is conducting a final year research project from any university in Hong Kong, in any subject which is related to Science, Technology, Arts, Design, Finance and Business. The applicant is required to submit a proposal including a plan for the final year project, as well as a recommendation letter by the applicant's primary mentor. Both undergraduate students of Year 3 and Year 4 are eligible to apply. The selection will be conducted by Selection Committee I, consisting of Hong Kong X and representative from HKU, CUHK, HKUST, HKBU, PolyU and CityU in Hong Kong.

Best of the Best FYP

Award 2016-2017

The 50 (maximum) Final Year Projects selected for financial support will compete for maximum 6 projects as Best of the Best FYP Award, and the awards are:
  • First Prize Award of 500,000 HKD, 1 project team;
  • Second Prize Award of 350,000 HKD, 2 project teams;
  • Third Prize Award of 250,000 HKD, 3 project teams.

Application Condition

The winning project team must subscribe to Hong Kong X incubation program as an exploration or angel project, and is subjected to the terms set by Hong Kong X incubation program, including an equity acquisition in discussion and agreement with the prize winners. Selection procedure is conducted by Selection Committee II, consisting of Hong Kong X and representative from HKU, CUHK, HKUST, HKBU, PolyU, CityU in Hong Kong, and from industries. Result is expected to be announced by the end of July, 2017.

1What are the eligibility requirements for the FYP?
a. At least one of the teammates must be a full-time UG Year 3 or Year 4 student
b. Any final year research project in any field related to Science, Technology, Finance, Business, Arts and Design, is eligible to apply.
2If we already secure supporting funds from school or other sources, are we eligible to apply?

3What are the application steps?

4Should my application be written in Chinese or English?
English is preferred.

7Who will be the judges?
The selection will be conducted by the Selection Committee, consisting of Hong Kong X members and representatives from City U, CUHK, HKBU, HKU, HKUST and Poly U.
8How many FYPs will be selected?
A maximum of 50 FYPs will be selected.
9What are the selection criteria?
The projects will be selected based on the following criteria:
a. Exploration of an innovative idea;
b. Connecting knowledge to potential application;
c. Potential for commercialization.
10How much is the supporting fund and how will it be paid?
By the end of December 2016, we will choose a maximum of 50 projects and fund each one with HK$ 20,000. Payment will be released in three instalments, with the first instalment awarded within 7 days after confirmation. The 50 selected project teams will then compete for the Best of the Best FYP Awards.
By the end of July 2017, we will announce the six finalist teams (maximum) for the Best of the Best FYP Awards, with a prize distribution as follows:
a. First Prize Award of HK$500,000, 1 project team;
b. Second Prize Award of HK$350,000, 2 project teams;
c. Third Prize Award of HK$250,000, 3 project teams.
11How will the second and third instalments of HK$20,000 be paid out?
Second instalment: End of Feb 2017
Third instalment: End of April 2017
12Are there any obligations for the Best of the Best FYP Award?
Yes. All winners must agree to join the Hong Kong X Incubation Program as an exploration or angel project, which is subjected to the selection criteria and terms set for the Hong Kong X incubation program, including equity acquisition in discussion and agreements with the finalists. Winning teams will be announced by the end of July, 2017.

15What is the Hong Kong X plan?
In the next four years, we expect to support 120 early-stage projects and 50 angel projects. Hong Kong X will commit HKD 2M to HKD 3M to promote the technology innovation culture and ecosystem in Hong Kong.
